Chard South – Melissa Whittaker-Mather

I moved to Chard 12 years ago and live with my husband and 2 year old son. I have previously worked as a care worker though presently  I am a stay at home parent.I am standing for the County Council because like many people I am dependant on public transport and I am very concerned about way local bus services are being managed.

The bus service is not only vital for ensuring that people can get to and from work, but routes must ensure those who need to access schools, colleges, hospitals, job centres, etc by bus can do so efficiently and cost-effectively.Buses must run on routes and at times that are appropriate, and  must be consistent, reliable, and an assurance that routes will be maintained.

I want to ensure that when the County looks at transport needs, it doesn’t leave behind those communities that rely on public transport. I also have concerns about the continuity of mental health services as they become more squeezed, the council have cut £950,000 from the mental health services budget and are still facing a budget overspend of £24m for this financial year.>I want to ensure that those suffering with mental health issues have access to local services, especially in places like Chard and the surrounding villages where the public transport links impose an extra burden on people with mental health issues being able to access the services they need.
